As Angels they come to you to
stay;
As Devils, they appear at times to
play;
Yet blessings they are and in
life it’s true;
Their time shall bring Greater
joy to you.
In moments of trial you may
wonder awhile;
What prompted you to desire this
child?
Then are blessings revealed
through tears;
Those often aren’t recognized for
years.
Times there'll be that you say
WHY ME!
Then whispered you hear, "Do
you still love me?"
That moment is fragile and
delicate for each of you.
For each is hurting and confused
it is true
Yet I implore your embracing
reply,
"Oh, Child, I love you!”
Years will pass and they shall
grow;
before you are ready, they shall
go.
Leaving you to reflect and ponder
anew.
How their time has brought
Greater joy to you.
Then you shall remember the
angel’s stay;
And laugh as you recall their
devilish play;
Mere hours or days it will seem,
their volume and their presence is banished to a screen;
And your heart is given to a rending
or joy, as you weep, laugh, keen, or groan.
Once
more the screen is black, leaving you to reflect and ponder anew.
How
their time brought
Greater joy to you.
Fondly,
you remember the angel’s stay;
And
laugh as you recall their devilish play.
This is a poem written for my wife about our children and the ever-present knowledge that these precious beings in our home have both angel and devil-like behaviors that bring us joy and heartache.
It was first publically shared with Jarrett and Meara Boling as a card for their first child's baby shower gift. Since that time, it has been shared with as part of each child announcement card that is passed around at work.
It has grown as life's experiences have taught me more of the joys and sorrows of parenthood. Each moment is precious and worthy of your full attention.
